Savina Monastery, Montenegro: Large and Small Churches of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Savina Monastery, or Savinovsky Monastery, is an Orthodox male monastery founded by monks who left Trebinje (modern-day Bosnia and Herzegovina). A century later, Vasily Ostrozhsky, who was also a fugitive monk from Herzegovina, built another famous Montenegrin monastery - monastery Ostrog.

The monastery complex includes the Small Assumption Church, the Large Assumption Church and the Church of St. Sava. The Small and Big Assumption churches stand side by side, surrounded by pine trees, adjacent buildings and old stone tombs. The miraculous icon of the Mother of God of Savinskaya is kept in the Great Assumption Church. The Small Assumption Church (1030) is famous for its frescoes (15th century), depicting scenes of religious festivities, as well as the torment of Christ. Above the entrance to the church, we can distinguish the year 1030, which is considered the year the church was built. The Great Assumption Church was erected in the 17th century and is an excellent example of the Baroque style in church architecture. The stone for the construction of the church was brought from the island of Korcula, which is in modern Croatia. The Big Assumption Church contains a unique iconostasis 15 meters high and a huge golden chandelier.

Even higher is the small Church of St. Sava (Crkva Sv Sava), the patriarch and founder of the independent Serbian church, which, according to legend, was built by Sava himself in the 13th century. Not far from the Church of St. Sava there is an observation deck that offers magnificent views of the Great Assumption Church and the Bay of Kotor.
